Alternative Ways to Capture your Reception Photos

Wedding reception photos are all about capturing the biggest and best party of your life. To truly capture the memories, you need to be able to capture all of your guests enjoying  the party. There are a few creative ways to do just that:

Disposable Cameras

Your wedding photographer is paid to get stylish shots of you and your bridal party.  If you want to capture your wedding through your guests’ eyes, handing out Disposable cameras allow you to capture fun candid shots of everyone. Disposable cameras can be great fun! On the flip side, sometimes guests who have had too many libations get a little camera crazy, and you may end up with pics of less desirable objects. Although disposable cameras are still a popular option, the photos are rarely any good with minimal number of ‘keepers’. Photos are usually very dark (due to the low power of the flash and relatively dark environment of a reception).

There are however  much better alternatives to disposable cameras for your reception photos.

Photo Booths

Hiring a photo booth to capture hilarious pictures of your wedding guests enjoying themselves has been a growing trend in recent years. Having your own photo booth creates a fun and lively vibe for you and your guests (of all ages) to enjoy! Not only will it be a big hit on the day but will be a talking point that will have your wedding discussed long after the event. A photo booth provides great shots for your guest book and wedding album as well as entertainment and a keepsake for your guests.

Polaroid camera

You can set up a photo station where guest can take photos of themselves with a Polaroid camera. At this photo station you can have an album for the Polaroids to be glued in and a message left by whoever was in the photo. A second photo can also be taken of the guests to be kept by them. For the best results, assign one or two people to take photos, change films and look after the album.

Digital Camera

You can buy a cheapish digital camera to be passed around at the reception. Make sure you appoint someone to be in charge of the camera so it doesn’t disappear. Remember to take your charger and spare memory cards.

CD/DVD

A really clever idea is to post a blank DVD/CD with your thank you cards asking your guests for any photos from your wedding day. For the best response with this request, include a stamped self addressed Disc envelope. The easier you make it for your friends and family, the more likely you are to see the photos. Let them know in your note that they don’t need to edit, rename or number the photos – simply burn to disc and post.

Amateur Photographer

There are many great amateur photographers that would jump at the chance of a paid wedding shoot – even if it’s only the reception. You can contact photography students that would love the experience. Just make sure you ask for complete usage rights of the files so you can print, email and post photos to Facebook. This should be spelled out in some form of signed document.
